The NeedleBenders Club was established in 1973 by a radio operator known as "The Coax Kidd" in California. This club was created as a response to the existing clubs of the time, which included notable names such as "The Bull Shippers," "The Trucker Tucker Club," and "The Violators." The Coax Kidd envisioned a club that would bring together only the most elite operators and skilled strappers, handpicking its members to foster a sense of exclusivity and competition among the various groups. This strategic selection process aimed to elevate the standards and camaraderie within the club, setting it apart from its contemporaries.
The founding members of the NeedleBenders Club included The Coax Kidd himself, who served as the President, alongside notable figures such as Brahma Bull, "The Midnight Gambler," and Bill Tucker. Following the passing of The Coax Kidd, Bill Tucker took over the presidency, continuing the legacy of leadership within the club. Before his own death,
Tucker appointed NeedleBender 409, also known as The Red Fox, to succeed him as President. This transition marked a significant moment in the club's history, as NeedleBender 409 held the position until early 2005, when he passed the torch to NeedleBender 777, ensuring the continuity of leadership and vision for the organization.
In 2010, NeedleBender 777 (Rick) appointed NeedleBender 696, known as Dave, as the Temporary President, while he stepped back to the role of Vice President. However, as of October 10, 2021, NeedleBender 777 (Rick) resumed the presidency due to a noticeable decline in activity and engagement within the club's management. Since then, the club has hosted many DX contests, created a Facebook community page “Friends of the Needlebenders” and this website. They also have added many more professional members to the club since retaking the club.
The club's history is still being compiled, as many of the original members have since passed away, and the documentation of their stories and contributions is a priority. The club is eager to gather and preserve these legends, both past and present, as they continue to shape the identity and legacy of the NeedleBenders Club.
